The G50
gearbox was carried over from the 3.2 Carrera of 1988/9 and consists of
an integral transaxle unit where both gearbox and final drive reside in
the same casing. Depending on application there are a range of gear ratios
used giving rise to five variations of the gearbox as shown below:

Some transaxles also had Limited
Slip Differentials (LSD) fitted - standard with all Turbos and Carrera
RS. A choice of locking ratios was offered, providing either a fixed 40%
or a variable 20% - 100% locking.
The oil used in the gearbox/final
drive is SAE75W/90 Gear Oil - 3.7 litres in the case of the non-Turbo
cars, 3.8 litres for Turbos. A valuable note for the DIY'er is to make
sure you can release the level plug BEFORE you drain the oil from the
transaxle. If the level plug is seized, once the transaxle is drained
you will not be able to refill it. |
